Johnson. \ COLE-WICKER — -A marriage centering the interest of the community occurred quietly at Buffalo Manse Wednesday morning at ten o’clock when Miss Flora Wicker and Mr. Byrd Code were the contract ing parties. The ceremony was performed by Rev. J. T. Barham, pastor of Buffalo Presbyterian church, and was wit nessed by Judge and Mra T. J. Mc Pherson, life long friends of the bride and groom. Following the ceremony the bridal couple left for a motor trip through the Valley of Virginia. Mrs. Cole is the daughter of the . late Mr. and Mrs. George Wicker, who ■ were prominent residents of Lee coun- j ty, and has made her home for a num ber of years in Sanford, where she is i loved for her splendid character; and j and attractive personality by a host; of friends, Mr. Cole is one of San- j ford’s leading business men and i churchmen, being president of the Cole Printing Company and lay-lea der of Steele Street Methodist church. Pittman and J. W. Kirkpatrick were hostesses at the largest amL*nost. brilliant bridge party of the season on Friday afternoon. The guests were greeted by the hostesses and tallies were passed by Mrs. J. F. Foster. There were sev enteen tables in play, arranged in liv ing room, sun parlor, and dining room, where masses of summer flow ers formed a colorful setting. Following a number of progres sions high score prize, a set of beau tiful crystal goblets with gold rims, was presented to Mrs. Keller Britt, and second prize, a rose glass sand wich plate, to Mrs. W. A. Freeman. Assisted by Mesdames R. E. Bob bitt, J. F. Foster, W. P. Dyer, J. A. Davis, J. T. Davenport, Jr., James Holland and W. R. Makepeace, the hostesses served delicious orange ice, during the games. Joinirig the play cakes and mints. Punch was served ers for refreshments were Mesdames J. H. Griffin, Harry Isaacson, and Miss Mae Oliver. Circles of Methodist Auxiliary. Circle 1 of the Woman’s Auxiliary , of Steele Street church met at the home of Mrs. A. J. McRae on Mon day afternoon with an attendance of fourteen and one new member, Mrs. j J. R .Milliken. Devotional exercises were conducted by Mrs. W. L. Seawell i and several business matters were taken up. Mrs. F. Y. Banner read a most interesting article on “Mis sions ‘in the Country." During the social hour sandwiches and tea were served. The circle will have Mrs. Hanner as next hostess. Mrs. T. S. Cross cordially enter tained Circle 2 and two new members were added to the roll on this occa sion, Mesdames U. L. Robinson end I. C. Brewer. Mrs. L. C. Davis conducted the devotional exercises and several committees reported. An inter esting program was given by Mes dames W. M. Kelly apdJ. .Mc Phail. At the conclusion of the meeting the hostess served a delicious • salad course with sandwiches, cheese straws, pickle, and iced tea. There were seventeen members present. With an attendance of thirteen numbers, Circle 3 met at the home of Mrs. G. T. Adams. The meeting was presided over by Mrs. O. P. Makepeace, who gave the Scripture reading, after which the Lord’s pray er was repeated in concert, Mrs. A. M. Hubbard gave an interesting ar ticle on “Educating Korean girls and children.’’ During the social hour Mrs. Adams served orange ice top ped with whipped cream and cherries, and cake. V Alice Green Missionary Society. The Alice Green Missionary Society of Steele Street church held its monthly meeting Monday evening at the home of Mrs. Robert L. Burns, there being, as usual, an excellent attendance. Mrs. Nell Forbes was enrolled as a new member and Miss Maude Cotton was a visitor.’ TTie meeting was opened with prayer by Mrs. Ben W. Smith, after which officers and committees gave their reports. The bulletin was pre sented by Mrs. W. A. Freeman and the program was in charge of Mes dames G. O. Barnhardt, Hill and A. B. Cox. Devotional exercises were conducted by Mrs. Cox and prayer was offered by Mrs. HilL An inter esting program on “Educating Korean Girls and Children,” was given by Mesdames Barnhardt and Hill. Mrs. M. D. Foister read a delightful ar ticle on “The Old Hymns." A very pleasant social hour fol lowed, during which the hostess, as sisted by her sister, Treseie Jackson, served a delicious ice course. The next meeting will be the society’s an nual picnic at Lemon Springs. Mrs. Scott Hostess to Club. Mrs. Charles L. Scott very gracious ly entertained the Halcyon Club mem berg last Tuesday afternoon, there being only one visitor , Mrs. H. P. Ed wards, of Panama-City, Fla. The spacious home was beautiful ly arrange! with summer flowers and two tables were placed in the living room and two in the library. The guests were greeted by Mrs. C. M. Reeves and directed by Airs. J. G. Formy-Duval to the living room where they were received by Mrs. Chaffin and presented to Mrs. J. H. Pumphrey, of Asheville, who with her husband is spending some time in Sanford at the Carolina Hotel. Tallies were passed by Mrs. R. T. Howard and a number of most inter esting games ensued. High score prize, a lingerie, was won by Mrs. E. A. Griffin, and low score prize, a rubber apron, by Mrs. Gus Womble. Knight, whose birthday anniversary it was and who ..was leaving Friday for an extended visit with relatives in Georgia, Miss Lau-Rhea Ward gave a most charming luncheon party Thursday at the Wiirik The table was attractively arrang ed with masses of summer flowers in pastel shades which found a cor responding tint in the lovely place cards. It was a great pleasure to the lo cal chapter order of the Eastern Star to have with them at the meeting Thursday evening two grand officers, Mrs. Agnes Hamilton, of Southern Pines, Past Worthy Matron, of the State -"of North Carolina, and Mrs. Neiie Leavitt, also of Southern Pines, District Deputy Worthy Matron. Both of these distinguished visit itors made interesting talks which were greatly enjoyed! Plans were made for the State meeting in Ashe villen next week which xffl be at tended by Mesdames F. R. The program for the afternoon con sisted of a most excellent sketc of Robert E. Lee, given by Mrs. Muse Cameron, and a delightful talk on “The Meaning of Decoration Day,” by Mrs. D. C. Lawrence.
